Statement from British Muslim Youth

Since 26th August 2014, the date the Jay Report was published, the Muslim community has been under perpetual attack and demonisation. Over the last fourteen months, the Muslim community has time and again condemned the wholesale Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) that was brought to light. Whether in the form of a community conference; or a rally held outside of Town Hall – we have called for the perpetrators to be prosecuted.

However despite this we, the entire Muslim community, have been tarred with the same brush. There is a perception in the minds of many ordinary people that all Muslims are now potential child abusers, or that they have been involved in some sort of a cover up. This is further perpetuated by fourteen far-right demonstrations in our town that have zapped poison into our local community. In turn our women have been threatened with rape, children attacked, Mosques vandalised, men physically assaulted whilst out earning their livelihood and an elderly man being murdered. The marginalisation and dehumanisation of the Muslim community has been in full swing.

What is the fault of school children who are called “groomers” in schools in this whole sordid affair? How can it be justifiable to threaten Muslim women with rape as a response to the findings of the Jay Report? Can anyone find a single reason to justify the murder of an innocent Muslim man? What reason do people have to smash Mosque windows?

Let it be made clear – if it was not already so – the Muslim community completely condemns all forms of Child Sexual Exploitation and will always stand with the victims of abuse. Our community, led by the organisation British Muslim Youth, held a rally in solidarity with the victims and called for the perpetrators to be prosecuted. However, the findings of the Jay Report cannot and must not be used to scapegoat and discriminate against the entire Muslim community due to the actions of certain individuals.

Islamaphobia is at unprecedented levels in Rotherham. According to figures collated by Tell MAMA, which records anti-Muslim hate crimes, there have been 27 attacks in Rotherham reported to them alone, in the last 12 months. This equates to more than 2 reports a month. Considering that Rotherham is a relatively small town, there is a real over-representation of hate crimes against Muslims in the town. Knowing what we know about the gross under reporting of such crimes, who knows what the real number is. One thing is for sure, the actual number will be many times higher. This is simply the tip of the iceberg.

During this whole period the Muslim community have been made prisoners in their own homes. South Yorkshire Police have piggybacked on this hostile environment towards the Muslim community by deflecting the attention of their own failures by scapegoating us. They have peddled a pernicious lie that: historically they failed to act of allegations of CSE, because they were afraid of being branded ‘racist.’ This is a grotesque re-writing of history; something that we will no longer sit back and allow to take seed. South Yorkshire Police say one thing when speaking to a Muslim audience, yet when speaking to a different audience, the Muslim community is simply cannon fodder.

It is against this backdrop that: we, the Muslim community of Rotherham, have voted for all Muslim organisations and institutions (whether religious or secular), which claim to represent Muslims in Rotherham, to cut all lines of engagement and communication with South Yorkshire Police. This policy will be in effect until and unless South Yorkshire Police can treat our community with respect and fairness, just as we have done with the police force going back many decades.

Any Muslim groups or institutions in Rotherham that do not adhere to this policy of disengagement will also be boycotted by the Muslim community.

South Yorkshire Police must listen to our concerns and treat us as equal partners pursuing shared goals. There must be no more double speak from them. They have to own up to their failures, before they cause irreparable damage. This must happen immediately without further delay. The time for treating the Muslim community as a political football which can blamed for other people’s failures – is now over.

We will not be treated as criminals any longer, nor will we be held responsible for acts of personal self-defence.

If South Yorkshire Police cannot adequately protect and serve the Muslim residents of Rotherham; then moving forward we will take all the necessary action to protect ourselves within the confines of the law, whilst maintaining a process of disengagement and non-communication with South Yorkshire Police.

Note: Cutting all forms of engagement and ties with South Yorkshire Police does not mean that you do not ring 999 at a time of an emergency or you stop reporting crimes. The boycott is purely in terms of dialogue, communication and engagement with South Yorkshire Police when it comes to dealing with issues and matters concerning general policing and welfare of the Muslim community. For example if the police wish to come to a Mosque to deliver a talk or provide Muslim groups with some sort of training, this is the sort of stuff that will no longer take place and from today, will be boycotted.

Remembrance Day is not far away now, but you couldn’t forget that with all the patriotic poppies filling your social media newsfeeds. Britain First, often, are the source of these ‘shared’ images of poppies to remember the fallen. Now, not so long ago, Britain First officially registered themselves as a political party and they are founded on their social media following. Many people who share their postings, do so without even realising the image’s source – but we need to change that. I won’t ever share a Britain First post – so am I part of the ‘95% who don’t care’ about our war veterans?

Initially, I’d like to just give some background history on what Britain First are/do. They are a far right group of fascists. No other way of putting it. They claim to be patriotic, but their fundamental formation was based around being anti-Islam. They started a Facebook page with infographics with things saying stuff like ‘If you’re against dog fighting share this image’ or ‘the death penalty is the only way to treat peadophiles’ etc…Essentially, all things that the majority of people agree with. But what people don’t realise, is that by sharing these images, more and more people see the BF page. Each year, they upload images of veterans and poppies asking people to share these images to show respect for British war heroes and suggest that if you don’t, you don’t love Britain and you’re not patriotic. This is how they reach more and more people. Once you’ve clicked on their page or engaged with their posts in any way, you will begin to see all sorts of xenophobic postings and images about muslims – most of which are based on pure fiction, and have no substance. On election day 2015, Britain First even told people to vote UKIP to ‘save Britain’. It scares me that almost 1 million people ‘like’ their page and regularly see their postings. Now most of these people are probably disgusted by the way these people conduct themselves – but they once liked the page because of a ‘patriotic’ post 3 years ago, and that’s why they can continue to spread their message of hate today.

Point 1: The posts of poppies and veterans fail to mention that 400,000 muslims fought for Britain in World War 1 – across Asia and the Middle East.

Point 2: Britain First is just a spin off of the National Front, the EDL and the BNP combined. They cannot deny that.

Point 3: The pictures they use are completely unrepresentative – seriously, they often post pictures of ‘extremists’ at protests claiming it to be a recent event. Save the image, and upload it to Google – you’ll often find they were first uploaded several years ago.

Point 4: Britain First are just as bad as ISIS. They are radicalising Christianity, and will only cause more tension between religions.

Point 5: They use Winston Churchill a lot as a figure of inspiration – but they are an anti-EU party. BF don’t realise Churchill was one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the EU, as a peace process. Both the EU and peace are something BF are against. It’s all so ironic.

Point 6: Both WW1 and WW2 were wars against fascism – the very thing that BF actively promote. Why would BF want to honour these war heroes? They fought in wars against causes such as BF.

Our task, as a country, is to stand up to extremism – in any form. Britain First are a part of this extremism. So the next time you see a poppy picture, and it’s from Britain First, just think – would I post this if it was from ISIS? It’s exactly the same thing.

If you want to share a picture of a poppy to respect the fallen this remembrance day, there’s a perfectly good one here. Right click on it, save it, and post it to Facebook. That’s how you show respect.

Finally, do not buy a poppy from anybody else but the Royal British Legion. They do some amazing work – however, last year it was exposed that BF were seling rip off poppies to generate profits to fund their hate campaigns. Support a real charity that supports our war veterans – not the polar opposite.

Hall of Shame 25/10/2015

We all know that many of the far right leave all social mores behind when they log onto social media. But occasionally a commenter will spew such hateful bile that their shame should be recorded.

Take this post from Britain First on Facebook:

The usual incitement to hate from BF... and they certainly got what the wanted:

Let's not beat around the bush here, Charlie Swift is lauding the genocide committed by the Third Reich.

I suppose we will never know if Charlie actually believes what he commented - but how many people would be willing to fire up the ovens and set the cattle trucks moving again?

IRBF began in September 2014 as International Report Britain First. Initially a series of Facebook events designed to mass report Britain First, the group has since expanded its remit to include all far right hate groups and pages.

IRBF’s rationale is simple: Social Media is not the place for hate speech and should be opposed at all times.
